Keeping It Sociological

Why Inequality Matters
Although these graphs reveal correlations, not causations, it shows that there are a lot of social problems associated with income inequality.  The systematic evidence is gathered at the organization level to show how the structure of income inequality can impact societal behavior.

True Colors - Racial Discrimination in Everyday Life 20/20 - originally broadcasted in 1991
I remember showing this clip, after it first aired, to my students at NCSU.  The hidden cameras revealed how blatant front stage bias behavior that wouldn't be noticed without the comparison between the two men.  20/20 also used the hidden camera (deceptive and probably unethical) to show how women are treated different from men when applying for a job or shopping for a car.

POVERTY
Although the sociological view looks at poverty from a macro perspective, the occasional hard hitting individual insight seems to resonate with people and the media.  We are wired to relate to social issues from the individual perspective (N=1)  and have to make extra effort to think critically about the structural factors that contribute to patterns of behavior like poverty.  So in the spirit of "N=1" focus, here are two interesting insights to the impact of poverty at the individual level
